Sutton and Wandle Valley Ramblers

Notes for new walkers

New walkers are welcome to try any of our group walks (unless pre-booking is indicated).

It is recommended you start with an easy or leisurely short walk (such as one of our new member walks).

If you are not sure whether a walk is suitable for you or require additional information please phone the walk leader (whose telephone number is given in walk listing)

You can come on up to three walks but after that you would be expected to join the Ramblers.

Dress Code/What to bring

Country walk casual! Warm and comfortable clothes are best. Remember the paths may be muddy. Dress for comfort/outdoors not for fashion!

Please bring a waterproof anorak as the British weather is always unpredictable!

Walking boots/shoes. Please wear comfortable and well fitting boots/shoes so that you walk easily and your feet stay dry and blister free.

Walking boots are recommended for country walks as paths and fields can be muddy

A hat and suncream are useful in hot weather - as you may be walking across open fields with no shade.

Water and snacks. You should bring a bottle of water and some snacks to consume during the walk. There will usually be rest stops during the walk. A mobile phone and small bag or rucksack are also useful.

Walker responsibilities

Walkers should take responsibility for their own safety and care on a group walk, and should bring with them medication which they may need on the walk to manage any condition(s) they might have (e.g inhaler). They might also let the walk leader know of such conditions at the start of the walk

Walkers are encouraged to carry an ICE (in case of emergency card) to provide their emergency contact details and important medical information.

Should they wish to leave a walk after it’s started, they should, wherever possible, let the walk leader or backmarker know, and be aware that they will be responsible for getting themselves home safely.

On the Day

Please arrive at the walk start point in good time. (In fairness to other walkers the walk leader will not be able to wait for latecomers). Many of our walks use public transport but for car share walks a lift to the walk start is dependent on a spare seat being available. Please introduce yourself to the walk leader on arrival. You may be asked to fill in the walk attendance list and may be asked whether you want to have a pub lunch (if it is part of the walk).

During the walk please follow the instructions given by the walk leader. Stay on the path shown by the walk leader - Do not take any short cuts.

Keep together with the rest of the group. The walk leader will normally stop periodically to allow everyone to catch up.

There may only be limited toilet facilities on route so be prepared to use toilet facilities when they are available.

Please read and observe the Important Notes to Ramblers

We hope that you enjoy your walk with us and decide to join us!
